Is Trivago legit?
Free hotel price-comparison site, not a seller: you book and pay on another site, so check that site and the 'more deals' list before you click.
Trivago is a real, Expedia-owned hotel metasearch site. It does not sell rooms; it sends you to a booking site or hotel and is paid per click. Australia's Federal Court fined it A$44.7 million in 2022 for ranking offers by commission rather than price.
A court found its top-ranked deal favoured sites paying the highest cost-per-click fee and that strike-through comparisons sometimes set a standard room against a luxury room (2016 to 2019 conduct, fined 2022). Consumer NZ found like-for-like comparisons only 13% of the time in 2018. Practices may have changed since, but the record is the worst in the category.
How fair is Trivago?
Five checks, 1–5 each. 3 is average for booking sites.
