Is Turo legit?

Peer-to-peer car sharing: you rent a private host's car, so every host's rules differ. Photograph everything, because damage, smoking and fuel disputes are common.

1 · Is it a real company that delivers?
Yes, it’s legit

Turo is a large, established car-sharing marketplace, and most trips work. But fees vary by host and trip, and disputes over damage, cleaning, fuel and late returns are frequent. Turo has sometimes backed host claims until a journalist stepped in.

2 · Will you pay what you were quoted?
Often not

The daily rate you see is not the total. A non-refundable trip fee (higher for short and last-minute trips), a young driver fee, protection plan, delivery, airport fees, extras and taxes are added at checkout. Turo's help page lists no fixed amounts.

How fair is Turo?

Five checks, 1–5 each. 3 is average for rental cars.

Claims and refundsDo damage and cleaning bills arrive after return?ConsumerAffairs reviewers say damage, fuel, toll and late-return claims often go the host's way. In a 2025 Boston Globe case, Turo backed a $1,200 scratch claim plus $400 'hidden damage' and only voided it after a consumer advocate stepped in.Sources:consumeraffairs.combostonglobe.com

Pick-up and deliveryHow quick is pick-up, and can you skip the counter? With no counter, many pick-ups are quick via contactless or delivery handoff. But reviewers report host cancellations close to pickup, dirty or poorly maintained cars, and pricier replacements.Sources:consumeraffairs.comhelp.turo.com

Fine printDeposits, debit cards, age rules and fuel termsRules are set car by car: mileage limits, fuel, extras and delivery fees vary by host. Drivers 18–20 can only pick the cheaper plans with $500–$3,000 damage caps. If you decline a Turo plan and rely on personal insurance, there is no cap on what you might owe.Sources:nerdwallet.comclark.com

SupportHow do disputes end?ConsumerAffairs reviews (2026) describe long waits, inconsistent answers and unresolved cases. In a 2022 WSB-TV case, a nearly $300 smoking charge went to collections before Turo refunded it and reinstated the account.Sources:consumeraffairs.comwsbtv.com
